Had Event Horizons actually not been rushed and had the time it needed to be filmed and edited we would of gotten a much more polished film. Ultimately the fault lies with Paramount as they rushed Event Horizon into production because they wanted it to come out ASAP to make up the gap left by the delays to Titanic. Many on the set believed the film was just cursed because of all the problems they encountered. The filming was beset from day 1 with accidents and technical problems. I mean it didn't help that many of the Visual effects were missing and the sound track had yet to be mixed. It also did badly with review audiences, the issue with gore being the biggest complaint. Unfortunately the film suffered from only having 4 weeks in editing, the average being 12 weeks. ![]() I enjoyed the film and it began my life long love of Laurance Fishbourne however I could see that the editing was jerky at best. My wife absolutely hate horror films and from the moment they first arrived on the bridge she closed her eyes and buried her head in my shoulder. I had no idea what it was about other than it was set in space. I remember goi g to the cinema to watch Event Horizon with my wife (then my girlfriend). I will never experience this again I think. Or anything to deal with the energy I didn't release applauding one of the most memorable cinema experiences of my life. I left like going to do karate in the garage. I was also a MASSIVE Prodigy fan, so with all that adrenaline buzzing, when the movie slammed to black and Funk Shit roared out I nearly did the very un-British thing of leaping out of my seat and applauding. Sat in the dark with 100 other people shrieking and hiding behind their popcorn. The penny dropped fairly early on, and I glance across at my friend who is also pretending not to be scared. I figured it was an 18 due to bad language and maybe some gratuitous space titties or something. So off I went with a friend and my brand new ID. The newspaper also had a condensed list meaning the poster was a black-and-white blob the size of a thumbnail. This film was advertised as a Sci-Fi, was an 18 certificate, and had that guy from Jurassic Park in it. So I checked my local newspaper for listings. The internet was around but still a novelty, and there was certainly no IMDB or YouTube. ![]() With that out of the way I wanted to go to the cinema to see an 18 certificate film. Of course the fist step was to get into a state in my local pub. I had just turned 18, and was naturally super keen to do all the "grown-ups" things. It inspired my username, as it represents an experience I will never likely have again: Going into a film blind based on the poster, in a time before internet spoilers. I would certainly recommend the movie though, and was just wondering what your thoughts were on the film?Įdit - It also gets bonus points for having "Funky shit" over the end credits! Then we cut to the climax and everything is wrapped up with a neat bow far too quickly. The terror on board the vessel is just getting started, when Weir turns full evil and reveals exactly what is going on. It's not often I wish for a movie to be longer but even another 10/15 minutes of story would've greatly benefited Event Horizon, imo. Sam Neil's character was definitely the most interesting, out of the bunch and I wish we got a bit more of his mind process during the mid section. The first hour or so is all effective build up but then things quickly turn into sheer mayhem, as the crew gets offed, one by one, in extremely grisly ways. I've read up about how more than half an hour of Event Horizon ended up on the cutting room floor, before release and it really shows when you watch the 96mins final product. I do feel, however, that the genius of that premise is lost in execution. The set design and atmosphere is absolute top notch and the premise of, pretty much - A haunted spaceship had me hooked from the get go. Overall thoughts: It was definitely worth checking out. Then, over the past few years, I'd started to see some more glowing reviews of the movie and even watched the Critical Drinker highly recommend it on YouTube so I was intrigued to actually see where I stood on Event Horizon. This is a film I'd not bothered about for years, as I knew it had got pretty negative reviews upon release and a couple of my friends had said it was just a rip off of Alien with some 90's cheese and VFX thrown in.
